The Lord of the Rings and the Occult

The Lord of the Rings was the sequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1937 novel, The Hobbit. This book series took shape in Tolkien’s mind in the late 1930s. One day as Tolkien was grading papers, he found a blank sheet a paper and a sentence came to his mind: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit” (1; see Works Cited, below). He wrote it down and began to ponder what a hobbit was and what kind of hole it lived in. From that day forward, J.R.R. Tolkien began a story that would become very popular all around the world.

His story, The Lord of the Rings, picked up popularity in the late ‘60s and became known as ‘the Bible of the “Alternative Society”.’ (1). The drug / counter-cultural revolution loved “Lord of the Rings”. Tolkien has a cult following that continues to this day.

The question now is: ‘Why is The Lord of the Rings series so popular?’ Why would the writings of a British Oxford professor of English Language and Literature be so popular around the world today? Why would The Lord of the Rings reach such popularity that it would be turned into a block-buster movie trilogy, which would gain over $1.03 billion for all three films (4)? And, why would The Hobbit movie, alone, exceed $1 billion in box office sales world-wide (4)?

The "Magic" of Lord of the Rings

There is something you need to understand. Growing up, I (the author of this article) was interested in The Lord of the Rings. I read the whole series (including The Hobbit) at least three times or more. I enjoyed the adventure and action and the plot. J.R.R. Tolkien was a master at story-telling. He knew how to write fiction. I am writing this article because I want people to be informed about The Lord of the Rings and how it is filled with real witchcraft and real sorcery.

[Read more here.]

In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (the main character) found a magic ring which can turn the wearer invisible (2). He uses it to escape his enemies. In The Fellowship of the Rings, and throughout the series, Frodo Baggins uses Bilbo’s ring to disappear and escape being caught. Frodo and some of his friend Hobbits teamed up with a dwarf (Gimli), an elf (Legolas), a man called Strider (or Aragorn), Boromir (a man), and Gandalf (a wizard). They set out to bring this magic ring to its destination: Mount Doom in the evil land of Mordor. Once it is cast into the fires of Mount Doom, it will be completely melted away (see (2) in Works Cited, below).

On their journey, this group meets evil creatures called “orcs”, a demon called the “Balrog”, other mythical creatures, and an “evil” wizard called Saruman. At one point, Gandalf and Saruman battle with each other using magic. Saruman overpowers Gandalf and locks him up in the tower of Orthanc at Isengard (3).

It opens when a magic word (a spell) is spoken. Source.)
Throughout this story, “good” magic is promoted as necessary for defeating “evil” magic. Gandalf says a magic word and a magic door (the door of Durin to the Mines of Moria) opens (2). In The Fellowship of the Ring (book) Gandalf uses magic to light his staff so the group can find their way out of Moria. He can also use his staff to Force-push people away from him (as when he fought Saruman in the tower of Orthanc). Gandalf could magically light things on fire, such as the campfire he lit up in The Two Towers (2).

The following is a list of some of the magic (i.e. sorcery) found in The Lord of the Rings and in The Hobbit

There are magic doors (the door of Durin); magic towers (Orthanc, which the Ents could not destroy because of magic); magic staffs (Gandalf's staff could produce magic light); magic rings (i.e. "the one ring"); a "magic mirror" (Galadriel's Mirror or magic pool); magic seeing-stones (the palantír of Orthanc, akin to a crystal ball); the "ghosts of dead men" (the Dead Men of Dunharrow); shape-shifting creatures (Beorn from The Hobbit); spells (Gandalf uses spells to conjure fire, produce light, break the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, etc.); and wizards (Gandalf, Saruman, and others) in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings (or The Hobbit) universe. (See (2) in Works Cited, below).

Magic is presented as being used for either good or evil.

What does the Bible say about magic (witchcraft) or sorcery?

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (emphasis added)
9 When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Verse 11 mentions “a wizard” and verse 12 says, “For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord….” God hates and abhors all forms of sorcery and witchcraft. It is all an abomination to Him! Revelation 21 says this:

Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” (bold / underline added)

(Photo: A wizard using magic. Source.)
Sorcerers (that includes witches and wizards and spirit mediums) “shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” God is not mincing His words! Repent from sorcery if you are personally involved in it!

Some people may argue that Lord of the Rings is not presenting real sorcery and that it is just make-believe. The late David J. Meyer, a pastor who had been a witch (warlock, or sorcerer) before getting saved wrote:

“I was once a witch and was very much a part of the world that J.R.R. Tolkien reveals in his Lord of the Rings trilogy.
(Photo: Gandalf vs. Saruman. Photo: Click for source)
… Witches do not believe in Satan. The first thing a neophyte or beginner witch is taught is that there is a “force.” The “force” has two sides and can be controlled by magic spells, words, potions, incantations, rope magic, rings, amulets, and so on. Witches believe that there is good witchcraft and bad witchcraft, and the good always triumphs over evil! Witches also teach that battles are fought in the Middle Earth and in the astral plane causing upheavals both above and below. Thus, witches emphasize that good must triumph over evil, but it is all witchcraft.” (Meyer) (bold / underline added)

David J. Meyer also mentioned that Frodo’s magic ring has an inscription in runes. He said that “these runes are real and are used in the occult…” (Meyer). Runes are used by real witches and real wizards (sorcerers) for casting spells and in practicing real sorcery. If that is not enough, Meyer mentioned that all three Lord of the Rings movies were released in December of 2001,’02, and ‘03 “at the time of the witchcraft sabat of Yule!” (Meyer).

Hollywood and Magic

There is a reason why Hollywood is producing movies about wizards, witches, and ‘special powers’. Stephen Dollins, a former high priest of Satanism, who left Satanism to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, gave a talk about Harry Potter. Dollins mentioned how Harry went to a special shop where he found his own magic wand that J.K. Rowling describes as being made of holly. Dollins said:

(Photo: Hollywood movies.)
“So, here you have Harry with a magic wand made of a constructed wood called holly, so you have Hollywood -- [There is a long pause here and some astonishment among the audience.]
-- now you wonder why the motion picture industry is cranking out occult movies by the dozens -- I mean, think about it. You can't even name on your fingers five movies that you've seen this year, or in the last year, that were totally wholesome. Most of them have overt occult significance in them. Most of them have something about communicating with spirits. Most of them are violent. Most of them show man is a lost animal, lost creature.” (5)

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, I encourage you to seek God and see what He shows you to do about your Lord of the Rings books (movies / games / etc.); Harry Potter books; Chronicles of Narnia books; Star Wars movies (and books); your movie collection, your kid’s movie-themed toys, your video games, etc. Ask God to show you what you should do about them and then do it.

2 Corinthians 6 gives us this instruction…

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 (bold / underline added)
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

Would you like to find out how to Know God's Name Personally?

IF YOU ARE SEEKING TO KNOW GOD, please read this message.

1 Timothy 2:5: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
Acts 4:12: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Ephesians 2:8-98 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

God loves us so much that He sent His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins and shed His precious blood to pay for all of these sins. (See John 3:16; and 1 Corinthians 15:3-5; and Romans 5:8-11.)

If you repent (turn away) from your sins (Acts 3:19), and believe and confess aloud that Christ has done this for you (Romans 10:9-10), and have made Him your Lord and Savior (again Romans 10:9-10) you are saved.

Now seek God with all your heart. Seek to know Him and you will (Jeremiah 29:13).

John 17:3: "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Jeremiah 29:13: “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Acts 4:12: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
